March 23: I attended SPACE (Small Press and Alternative Comics Expo) this weekend in Columbus. It was a fantastic experience. I was taken off the waiting list and given a table soon before the convention so I had very little time to prepare. My sister was going to share my table with me but then sis suddenly had her own table!! I was not hopeful about any sales because not only is it an incredibly small convention (literally one or two rooms) but what I brought was 95% illustrator and 5% comic artist. Most people there were stocked full of their indy comics with only a few illustration prints. I was intimidated the first day, wondering if I was fit to be there. However, I did very well!!
I was so pleased to find what a friendly atmosphere it was. I was able to talk to a LOT more artists in detail than I did at Ohayocon. I loved it!! The woman sitting at the table next to mine did traditional animation. She was showing her 3-minute movie which she made by creating 1,200 individual guache paintings. O.M.G. The indy comic creators seem like a tight-knit community of creative people filled with artists and writers of varying backgrounds. It was a HUGE networking experience. I met so many wonderful people and got a LOT of offers for collaborative work. I want to accept every single offer, as long as I'm able to fit it all into my schedule. Thank you for the fantastic experience, SPACE!
